A tribute to our late Philippine President Corazon Cory Aquino, a mother, an icon of democracy, first female president of the Philippines, Asia first female president and an inspiration to the million Filipinos worldwide.
Maria Corazon “Cory” Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino (January 25, 1933 – August 1, 2009) was the 11th President of the Philippines, serving from 1986 to 1992. She was the first female president of the Philippines and was Asia’s first female president.
A self-proclaimed “plain housewife”, Aquino was married to Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. (1932–1983), a leading figure in the political opposition against the autocratic rule of President Ferdinand Marcos. After her husband was assassinated upon his return from exile in the United States on August 21, 1983, Aquino, who had no prior political experience, became a focal point and unifying force of the opposition against Marcos. She was drafted to run against Marcos in the 1986 snap presidential elections. After Marcos was proclaimed the winner despite widespread reports of electoral fraud, Aquino was installed as President by the peaceful 1986 People Power Revolution.
President Aquino led the transition back to democracy, with the ratification and enactment of a new permanent constitution in February 1987. Progress was made in revitalizing democratic institutions and respect for civil liberties, but Aquino’s administration was also viewed as weak and fractious, and a return to full political stability and economic development was hampered by several attempted coups staged by disaffected members of the Philippine military.
Aquino died on August 1, 2009 after suffering from colon cancer.
Thank you so much Tita Cory. We will always remember what you did and your sacrifices for our country. Rest In Peace.
What is your message for our beloved Cory Aquino?
Express them below and let the world know.
Oh what a circus, oh what a show
The Philippines has gone to town
Over the death of a woman called Cory Aquino
We`ve all gone crazy
Mourning all day and mourning all night
Falling over ourselves to get all of the misery right
Oh what an exit, that`s how to go
When they`re ringing your curtain down
Demand to be buried like Cory Aquino
It`s quite a sunset
And good for the country in a roundabout way
We`ve made the front page of all the world`s papers today
But who is this Santa Aquino?
Why all this howling, hysterical sorrow?
What kind of goddess has lived among us?
How will we ever get by without her?
She had her moments, she had some style
The best show in town was the crowd
Outside the streets of EDSA crying, `Cory Aquino`
But that`s all gone now
As soon as the smoke from the funeral clears
We`re all gonna see and how, she had meddled for years.
You let down your people Aquino
You were supposed to have been immortal
That`s all they wanted, not much to ask for
But in the end you could not deliver
Sing you fools, but you got it wrong
Enjoy your prayers because you haven`t got long
Your queen is dead, her reign is through
And she`s not coming back to you
Show business kept us all alive
Since twentyfive February 1986
But the star has gone, the glamour`s worn thin
That`s a pretty bad state for a state to be in
Instead of government we had a stage
Instead of ideas, a prima donna`s rage
Instead of help we were given a crowd
She didn`t say much, but she said it loud
Sing you fools, but you got it wrong
Enjoy your prayers because you haven`t got long
Your queen is dead, her reign is through
She`s not coming back to you
though i may not agree with you on some part, still an awesome poem you got there
my respect
